Shoulder Surgery

Treatment of rotator cuff tears, recurrent dislocation, frozen shoulder and shoulder arthritis.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which makes it prone to injury, inflammation and tendon tears, especially with age or overhead work.

We always start with an accurate diagnosis, then choose the right treatment, from physiotherapy and injections to arthroscopic tendon repair or shoulder replacement for advanced disease.

When is it needed?

  • Shoulder pain when lifting the arm or at night
  • Weakness lifting the arm after an injury
  • Repeated shoulder dislocations
  • Severe shoulder stiffness

What to expect

  1. 01Examination, X-rays and MRI where needed
  2. 02Conservative treatment first in most cases
  3. 03Arthroscopic repair when a tear needs surgery
  4. 04Physiotherapy to restore movement and strength

Recovery

After tendon repair the arm usually rests in a sling for a few weeks before physiotherapy builds up gradually. Full recovery can take 4 to 6 months.

Questions about this treatment

Does frozen shoulder need surgery?

Rarely. Most patients improve with physiotherapy and injections over a few months; surgery is kept for cases that do not respond.

Why is my shoulder pain worse at night?

This is common with rotator cuff inflammation and tears, because lying on the shoulder compresses it. Night pain that lasts more than a few weeks is worth having assessed.
