Patient Guide

What to know before your visit and before and after surgery, to make your treatment journey easier.

01

Before your first visit

  • Bring your ID and insurance card if you have one.
  • Bring previous X-rays or MRI scans with their reports (discs or photos on your phone).
  • List your medications, chronic conditions and previous operations.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that makes it easy to examine the affected joint.
  • Write your questions down beforehand so you do not forget them.
02

Preparing for surgery

  • Complete the tests the doctor requests a few days before surgery.
  • Tell the doctor about blood thinners and diabetes or blood pressure medication, which may need adjusting.
  • Stop smoking if you can; it slows bone and wound healing.
  • Follow the fasting instructions before anaesthesia.
  • Prepare your home: remove slippery rugs, and set up a firm chair and a nearby place to sleep.
03

After surgery

  • Take painkillers regularly as prescribed in the first days; good pain control helps you move.
  • Keep the wound clean and dry until the stitches are removed.
  • Use ice and elevation to reduce swelling.
  • Do your physiotherapy exercises; they are a key part of a successful result.
  • Take blood-clot prevention medication if prescribed, and keep moving regularly.
  • Attend your follow-up appointments on time.
04

For stronger bones and joints

  • Keep a healthy weight; every extra kilogram multiplies the load on your knees.
  • Walk, swim and do strengthening exercises regularly.
  • Get enough calcium and vitamin D, and moderate sun exposure.
  • Mind your posture, especially at the computer and on your phone.
  • Make the home safe for older relatives to prevent falls and fractures.

When to call us or go to the emergency department

  • High fever, or redness and discharge from the wound
  • Calf pain and swelling, or sudden shortness of breath
  • Numbness, coldness or blue discolouration of the limb
  • Severe pain that does not improve with painkillers
  • Sudden leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control
