Pediatric Orthopedics

Assessment and follow-up of bow legs, flat feet and children’s fractures.

Children’s bones differ from adults’: they are still growing and heal quickly, and much of what worries parents is a normal part of development.

We reassure parents when things are normal, and treat early when a child needs it.

When is it needed?

  • Bow legs or knock knees beyond the expected age
  • Painful flat feet
  • Limping or toe-walking
  • Children’s fractures and injuries

What to expect

  1. 01A calm, child-friendly examination
  2. 02X-rays only when necessary
  3. 03Clear explanation for parents of what is normal and what needs follow-up
  4. 04A treatment or monitoring plan suited to age

Recovery

Children’s fractures usually heal faster than adults’, and many cases of bow legs and flat feet improve with growth and only need monitoring.

Questions about this treatment

Are my child’s bow legs normal?

Bow legs are common and normal up to about age two, often turning into knock knees until around seven. See a doctor if it is severe, one-sided, or persists beyond these ages.

Does a child with flat feet need special shoes?

Not always. Flexible, painless flat feet are common in children and usually need no treatment. We assess whether any treatment is needed.
