Osteoporosis

Bone density screening and treatment to prevent fractures, especially after menopause.

Osteoporosis is a silent condition in which bones lose density and can break after even a minor fall. The most common resulting fractures are of the hip, wrist and spine.

A simple bone density scan detects it early, and treatment greatly lowers the risk of fractures.

When is it needed?

  • Women after menopause
  • Men over 70
  • Anyone who has broken a bone in a minor fall
  • Long-term steroid users

What to expect

  1. 01A bone density (DEXA) scan
  2. 02Vitamin D and calcium blood tests
  3. 03A suitable medication plan
  4. 04Diet advice and fall-prevention exercises

Recovery

Osteoporosis treatment is long-term, with regular follow-up and a repeat density scan every one to two years to check the response.

Questions about this treatment

Does osteoporosis have symptoms?

Usually not until a bone breaks, which is why density screening is advised for people at higher risk.

Are calcium and vitamin D enough?

They are the foundation of prevention, but people with osteoporosis usually need bone-strengthening medication prescribed for their case.
