Fractures & Trauma

Fracture care with casting or surgical fixation using plates and screws, including hip fractures in older adults.

Fractures range from simple breaks treated in a cast to complex accident injuries that need surgical fixation with plates, screws or intramedullary nails.

The aim is for the bone to heal in the right position and for the limb to work again as soon as possible, while avoiding complications such as stiffness or malunion.

When is it needed?

  • Upper and lower limb fractures
  • Wrist and ankle fractures
  • Hip and femoral neck fractures in older adults
  • Fractures that healed in a poor position or have not healed

What to expect

  1. 01Assessment with X-rays, and CT scans where needed
  2. 02Fracture reduction and fixation with a cast or surgery
  3. 03Regular follow-up X-rays to confirm healing
  4. 04Physiotherapy to restore movement and strength

Recovery

Most fractures heal within 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the bone, your age and general health. Smoking noticeably slows healing.

Questions about this treatment

Does every fracture need surgery?

No. Many fractures heal in a cast or splint. Surgery is needed when a fracture is displaced, enters the joint or is unstable.

Do plates and screws have to be removed later?

In most cases they can stay in permanently. They are removed only if they cause discomfort, or depending on the fracture and your age.
