Back & Neck Pain

Diagnosis and treatment of back and neck pain, disc herniation and sciatica, starting with conservative care.

Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons to see an orthopedic doctor. Causes range from muscle strain to disc herniation, spinal arthritis and spinal stenosis.

The good news is that most back pain improves without surgery through physiotherapy, medication and lifestyle changes. We pinpoint the cause, set out a clear plan, and refer to specialist spine surgery when it is truly needed.

When is it needed?

  • Lower back pain lasting more than a few weeks
  • Pain travelling down the leg (sciatica) or arm
  • Numbness or weakness in the limbs
  • Chronic neck pain, often from desk work

What to expect

  1. 01A full neurological and musculoskeletal examination
  2. 02X-ray or MRI only when needed
  3. 03A plan combining physiotherapy, medication and exercise
  4. 04Referral for specialist surgery when necessary

Recovery

Most patients improve within 6 to 12 weeks when they follow the plan. Seek urgent care for sudden leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Questions about this treatment

Does a herniated disc need surgery?

Usually not. Most disc herniations settle over weeks to months with conservative care; surgery is kept for nerve weakness or pain that does not respond.

When is back pain an emergency?

Sudden leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Go to the emergency department straight away.
